Authorities in eastern Georgia say a man killed himself after being wounded by a Department of Natural Resources officer who says the man brandished a weapon at him.

The Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1V738Ju ) reports Sgt. Doyte Chaffin and five witnesses say the ranger shot 28-year-old David S. Owens on a Grovetown road Sunday after Owens chambered a round in his handgun and pointed it at Chaffin. It's unclear where Owens was shot.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the wounded Owens then used his gun to shoot himself.

Prior to the shooting, authorities say Chaffin was unaware that someone had recently called 911 about an armed walking in the road. Chaffin had been investigating an unrelated hunting complaint.

Chaffin is on administrative leave, per standard procedure, while the GBI investigates the shooting.
