Authorities say a wrong-way freeway driver has died in California after being shot from a San Bernardino County sheriff's helicopter during a chase.

Deputy Deon Filer says deputies began pursuing a carjacking suspect from the Fontana area at around noon Friday. The SUV sped up to 100 mph as it veered along streets and Interstate 215, traveling south in northbound lanes into San Bernardino and sideswiping a car.

Filer says a deputy opened fire from a helicopter. TV reports show at least five gunshots in the SUV's hood.

The driver got out and began running on the freeway before collapsing. Filer says it's unclear whether he was shot or died from other injuries.

The abandoned SUV continued on and struck another SUV, injuring three people. There's no word on their conditions.
