A homeowner is facing charges after shooting two bear cubs rummaging through his trash.

One cub was killed instantly in Tuesday morning's shooting in Evergreen. The other was wounded and later euthanized. The mother black bear ran across the street and into a tree, where she remained for hours likely because of onlookers.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the man first fired rubber rounds from his shotgun to try to scare the bears away, but then he fired one live round to protect his dog after it ran outside. The live round ended up going through a neighbor's window.

It's the latest in a series of encounters between people and bears in recent weeks in northeastern Colorado as bears have ventured closer to populated areas looking for food.
