A 28-year-old man has admitted he killed a Fort Bragg soldier after she confronted him about being on the sex offender registry after a night of drinking.

Nicholas Holbert pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder, accepting a plea deal that sentences him to life without parole.

Prosecutors say 23-year-old Army Spc. Kelli Bordeaux and her husband befriended Holbert. But authorities say while out drinking alone with her new friend in April 2012, Bordeaux got a text detailing Holbert's name on the sex offender registry.

Authorities say that when Bordeaux told Holbert she didn't want to hang out with him anymore, he knocked her unconscious.

Prosecutors say Holbert then beat Bordeaux to death when she woke up and started screaming. Her remains were found two years later.
