Richmond police say an officer has been wounded and a suspect fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire.

According to media outlets, police responded to a report of an armed person in an area west of downtown Wednesday afternoon. The officer was shot in the arm and was taken to a Richmond hospital.

Police spokesman Gene Lepley told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1ORDyRc ) that two officers responding to the call attempted to talk to the armed person, who fled. He said police gave chase, and shots were fired. Lepley said a handgun was recovered at the scene.

Identities of the people who were shot were not immediately released.
