Authorities say a man left his 6-month-old baby in a truck parked at a Metro station in Maryland for hours before realizing his mistake and calling authorities, who rescued the child.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says the man parked at the Forest Glen station about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and headed to work, leaving the baby behind. Stessel says that by 10 a.m., the father realized he forgot the baby and contacted authorities.

Rescuers broke a window to reach the baby. Stessel says he was conscious and alert but had an elevated temperature. Temperatures outside were in the 80s at the time.

The baby was taken to a hospital, where Stessel says investigators are speaking with the father. He says Metro Transit Police won't issue a citation Wednesday, but prosecutors and Child Protective Services will investigate.
