Police have evacuated the Wisconsin Capitol building in the wake of a bomb threat.

Officers began evacuating the building shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday as legislators were in the midst of debating the state budget in the Assembly chambers. They told everyone in the building to get on the other side of the street from the building and then began evacuating people gathering on the building's lawn for an evening music concert as well.

The state Department of Administration controls the Capitol Police and is responsible for the building. DOA spokesman Cullen Werwie said in an email the evacuation was due to a credible bomb threat. He did not elaborate but promised more information would be forthcoming.
