A West Virginia teenager was killed and two others were injured when they were apparently struck by lightning while fishing, authorities said Monday.

Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said emergency crews were called to called to a residential pond outside Fayetteville, approximately 60 miles southeast of Charleston, at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time.

Kessler said first responders found three injured 17-year-old boys. He said the three were fishing when a severe storm hit the area. The lightning apparently first struck a nearby tree before striking the boys.

"This appears to be a very tragic, freak accident," Kessler said in a statement.

A dispatcher at the Fayette County 911 center told the Associated Press that one of the surviving teens was in critical condition, while the other was expected to fully recover. None of the victims' names were released.
