CATONSVILLE, Md. – A co-head coach of the University of Maryland Baltimore County women's lacrosse team has been fired following a text message scandal that led to five players being suspended.
The school's athletic department said in a statement Wednesday that Tony Giro is no longer with the program and is "on leave from the university." Amy Slade is now head lacrosse coach. She had shared coaching duties with Giro.
The five players were suspended indefinitely for writing text messages that threatened freshmen on the team. They have already missed two games. Giro was not on the sideline for last week's game against Drexel.
The athletic department did not explain Giro's absence or specify the reasons for his dismissal.
The university says it has taken steps to protect the freshmen who were threatened.
