A Houston pharmacy worker fatally shot his female colleague before turning the gun on himself Wednesday after days of apparently trying to "enhance" their work relationship, possibly to a romantic level, police said.

The shooting, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. at a pharmacy building that is part of the Ben Taub General Hospital complex, was in view of up to seven employees, though no one else was hurt in the incident, Houston police spokesman John Cannon told FoxNews.com. He added that two customers were in the pharmacy at the time, but did not witness the shooting.

The shooter, a 58-year-old man, walked into the pharmacy's workstation and shot the woman, who Cannon said was younger but whose exact age he did not release, several times at point-blank range, before turning the gun on himself.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and she was pronounced dead 10 minutes later. Their names were not immediately released, pending notification of their families.

A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered, though it was not immediately clear how the shooter obtained the firearm or whether he owned it. Authorities were reviewing security video taken during the incident.

The two employees had worked together at the pharmacy for several years, but Cannon said the shooter was trying to take the relationship "to another level," though it was not clear if he was trying to pursue a romantic involvement.

"In recent days or weeks, he had tried to 'enhance' their friendship or relationship," he said.

The shooting did not affect hospital trauma or emergency services, as the pharmacy is located in a separate building from the main hospital, Cannon added.
