The U.S. Navy says a Marine who ejected from an airplane over the Persian Gulf is "presumed lost."

A statement Thursday that the Marine was one of two enlisted crew members who ejected from an MV-22 Osprey on Wednesday when it appeared the aircraft might crash after takeoff from the USS Makin Island. The Navy says the other crew member was rescued.

The statement said both the Marines and U.S. Coast Guard conducted an extensive search to look for the Marine. The Navy says the Marine's name will be withheld pending the notification of the troop's family.

Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. The USS Makin Island is currently on a scheduled deployment supporting military operations against the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq and Syria.
