A New York City couple was charged Tuesday with multiple counts of assault after authorities said they starved and beat their 12-year-old daughter, who weighed 58 pounds.
The New York Post reported that the couple, Sheetal Ranot, 31, and Rajesh Ranot, 46, of Ozone Park, Queens, allegedly abused the girl so severely that the tendons on her wrists were sliced to the bone. Rajesh Ranot, the girl’s biological father, allegedly hit her with a baseball bat when she was forced to take cold showers.
The couple allegedly locked the girl in her bedroom for long periods of time without food or water.
The girl reportedly stayed quiet about the alleged beatings due to fears that her stepsiblings would be put in foster care.
The couple was charged with multiple accounts of assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
