Houston man accused of blinding stepdaughter, 2

HOUSTON – A Houston-area man has been charged with beating his 2-year-old stepdaughter and leaving her blind.

Harris County jail records show 26-year-old Angel Martinez was being held Thursday on an injury to a child charge. Online jail records don't list an attorney for Martinez, who was booked Monday and bond set at $75,000.

The mother took the girl to a hospital Dec. 12. A criminal complaint says Martinez told investigators he threw the girl into the air but couldn't catch her and her head hit a chair. Doctors say the injuries don't appear accidental.

The mother faces a charge of injury to a child by omission.

A spokesman for the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston on Thursday said under federal rules he was not allowed to release any information.
