Police track down woman who lied about dying father to get out of ticket
A New Hampshire woman is facing charges after she allegedly told a state trooper she was rushing to her dying father's side to get out of a speeding ticket.
WMUR reports that a state trooper stopped 28-year-old Carley Williams of Nashua Friday night for doing 82 m.p.h. on the Everett Turnpike in Nashua.
She reportedly told the trooper that her father was dying at a Manchester hospital and she was hurrying to be with him.
The trooper took down her information and let her go, but learned upon further investigation that her father died in 2008. He also learned the car's registration had been suspended.
Police Lt. Christopher Wagner told WMUR that Williams' story was initially convincing.
"The trooper, using his best roadside discretion was looking to maintain public safety but at the same time appealing to the emotional needs of Miss Williams," Wagner told the station. "He took down the basic information, and he sent her on her way."
Police say the trooper later went to Williams' home -- obituary in hand -- and arrested her Sunday. She is due in court in August.
