WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Authorities say a suburban Philadelphia couple ran a dog-fighting ring at their home that killed at least 10 dogs and maimed many more.
Chester County officials announced Wednesday that animal cruelty charges have been filed against Shane Santiago and Laura Acampora of West Brandywine.
They also face child endangerment counts because five children lived with them.
Officials began investigating after two abused dogs were found along area roads. The Daily Local News reports neighbors had also complained about suspicious activity at the house.
District Attorney Thomas Hogan described the home as "a nightmare." He says six dogs recovered from the property were turned over to animal welfare officials.
The suspects are being held in county prison. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers.
