A Massachusetts mother is in custody after police said she slashed her two children in the throat and set her apartment on fire.

Police said the children, ages 3 and 8, suffered very serious injuries and remain in critical condition at the Children's Hospital Boston, Fox affiliate WFXT-TV reported.

Tanicia Goodwin, 25, of Salem, Mass., will be arraigned Monday in Salem District Court on several charges, including two counts of assault with intent to murder and two counts assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and arson.

Firefighters said the two children were found in adjacent seventh-floor apartments just before 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. One of those apartments was filled with heavy smoke and no adult was nearby, they added.

Authorities have not released the names of the children.

About 50 people were left homeless as a result of the fire, according to the station.
