A plot to smuggle a woman across the California-Mexico border in the wall of a van was foiled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, officials said.

The 1993 Dodge Caravan was stopped Friday at the San Vsidro port of entry. Upon inspection, officers noted the driver's side panel felt and sounded unusual when tapped.

Officers removed the panel to find a woman hiding inside. The woman was identified as a Mexican national, who was unable to legally enter the U.S., officials said.

The woman will be held in the U.S. to serve as a material witness to the incident before she is returned to Mexico.

The driver of the van, a 43-year-old U.S. citizen, will face criminal charges.
