A 1-year-old boy was killed Saturday night when he was attacked by his family's pit bull at his grandparents' Texas home, the Houston Chronicle reported.

A statement from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said the baby was mauled at a home in the 27000 block of Medina Circle, in Magnolia, about 43 miles (70km) northwest of central Houston.

A deputy who responded to the 8 pm call tried to control the dog but was forced to shoot the animal when it lunged at him. It was unclear if he killed the dog.

The child was reportedly at the address with his 45-year-old grandmother when he was attacked. The woman was hospitalized due to the trauma of the incident, but was not physically injured, officers said.

The child and his mother recently moved in with the grandparents, the report said, adding that the mother had not yet been located.
