A California school board member is reportedly rejecting calls for her to step aside after it was revealed that she did not inform the public about her marriage to a convicted murderer.

Fontana Unified School District board member Leticia Garcia apologized Monday for not disclosing her marriage to convicted murderer Jason Garcia, who was released from prison in September after serving a 27-year sentence, the San Bernardino Sun reports.

Leticia Garcia confessed to telling voters she was divorced, and called her marriage to Garcia a legally recognized "confidential" marriage license that she was under no obligation to disclose publicly, according to the newspaper.

Fellow school board members as well as Mayor Acquanetta Warren have since called for Garcia to step down from her leadership position on the board.

"She needs to do the right thing and step down as vice chair of the board," Warren told the newspaper. "She, at a minimum, should not be in a position to represent this group."

Garcia, however, is reportedly refusing to leave her post, saying, "I have done nothing illegal."

"There will be a lot of people who don't understand why I did what I did ... I'm sorry for those people I've hurt," she reportedly said.

Garcia is claiming that under California law, only she and her husband or a court order can disclose the marriage, according to the newspaper.

"I understand the confusion that this law has created," she reportedly said. "I will have no other comment about what is a personal and private family issue."

Garcia was reportedly elected to a four-year term on the board in November 2010. Her husband was released from California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo on Sept. 30.
