An illegal immigrant -- one of 15 who had just crossed the border into the U.S. from Mexico -- was seriously wounded in an attack by a gang of suspected drug traffickers at a rest stop in Arizona's Pinal County early Thursday, police told FoxNews.com.

The same group may be responsible for the shooting death of another unidentified man believed to be an illegal immigrant who was later found fatally shot in the same area, a rest stop near mile post 150 and Interstate 8 near Antelope Peak, about 25 miles west of Casa Grande, Pinal County Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney said.

"[The victim] said he was with 14 others from Mexico when they stopped at a rest area near Antelope Peak," Gaffney told FoxNews.com. "While resting, an unknown group of individuals walked up on them and opened fire."

The unidentified 35-year-old victim, who suffered a single gunshot wound to the stomach, then fled the area at about 2:15 a.m. Thursday and called his daughter in Phoenix. She then notified police, Gaffney said. He was taken by helicopter to an area hospital.

Responding officers later found the body of the other victim, a man believed to be in his 30s who was fatally shot, Gaffney said. A handgun was recovered near his body.

"It's still an active scene," he said. "We're trying to get as much evidence as we can and to find any suspects who may be out there."
