Police are hunting for a burglar who allegedly stole 40,000 pennies from a Maryland church and beat a pastor, MyFoxDC.com reports.

The Montgomery County Police said the New Creation Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Md., was burglarized on Saturday. The robber reportedly made off with 40,000 pennies, which were part of a charity project by the church community's children, according to the station.

Police said that a man -- likely the same burglar -- beat a pastor inside the church the following night.

Pastor Jose Alfonson Rivas, whose congregation rents the church on Saturdays, had returned on Sunday with his wife to clean the kitchen. Rivas reportedly encountered a man inside the church after hours. The man allegedly beat the pastor, who suffered cuts on his forehead and face, the station reports.
