California authorities say three women face criminal charges after they allegedly made up a story of a child's funeral in a scheme to collect money, ktla.com reports.

The women allegedly made signs and received cash donations totaling $1,000 from drivers passing through their Covina, Calif., neighborhood, according to the website.

A witness, who had seen the women holding up the signs, reportedly called police on Friday.

The women allegedly claimed that the money was going toward a funeral for a boy killed in a car accident. But their story quickly fell apart under police interrogation.

The women are reportedly facing fraud charges.
