Can a $197 Million High School Make the Grade?

Newton North High School

Some residents in Massachusetts are cringing at the cost of the state’s most expensive public high school – nearly $200 million – as the newly built facility opened its doors on Tuesday.

Newton North High School in Newtonville, Mass., a 413,000-square-foot facility that cost $197 million to build, reportedly features an art complex and weight room, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a climbing wall for students.

The state has so far contributed nearly $40 million to build the school, reports, and Newton Mayor Setti Warren said the state will likely be paying for the remaining cost over the next 30 years.

The project, which Warren said "made us the poster child for skyrocketing costs and excess," reportedly angered some residents who claimed the cost to build Newton North High School was exorbitant for a public school.

Others, meanwhile, say the high school, equipped with language labs and state-of-the-art athletic wings, will raise the bar for public school students and bring value to the community.

"It’s good for the values of your home if you have an amazing school in the neighborhood," one resident told the station.
