Looking for somewhere to visit in the new year? We hear that Sri Lanka is the place to go. Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2013” ($14.99) lists the tropical island nation as the top country for the coming year. Sri Lanka, which is bouncing back from a 26-year civil war, which ended in 2009, and the devastating 2004 tsunami, has become a great-value destination..

Compiled by editors and contributors, the annual guide book gives you the low down on the hot cities, countries and regions to visit in 2013. It also contains lists like the unluckiest places for 2013 (Bermuda Triangle, anyone?) and the best places to hunt for buried treasure.

The top cities include Puerto Iguazú, Argentina (#10); Christchurch, New Zealand (#6) and Amsterdam (#2). San Francisco, the “darling of America's west coast,” is Lonely Planet’s pick for best city to visit in 2013.

Mediterranean beauties bookend the top regions list, with Campania, Italy--home of Naples and the Amalfi Coast--and Corsica, France being ranked tenth and first respectively. The route for the 100th Tour de France will begin on Corsica’s challenging terrain.

Here are Lonely Planet’s top 10 countries:
10. Madagascar
9. Dominican Republic
8. Turkey
7. Iceland
6. Solomon Islands
5. Slovakia
4. Ecuador
3. South Korea
2. Montenegro
1. Sri Lanka
