COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) Perry Hills has been selected to be Maryland's starting quarterback.

First-year coach DJ Durkin made the announcement Wednesday after overseeing a competition this summer between Hills, Caleb Rowe and two freshmen.

Hills, a senior, will launch the season on Sept. 3 against Howard.

Durkin says, ''Perry has embraced this challenge from Day 1 and shown improvement every day.''

Hills started eight games in 2015, passing for 1,001 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 535 yards, including 170 against Ohio State, a school record for a quarterback.

It didn't take long for him to make an impression on Durkin, who said, ''He's grasped our offense and the way we want to do things, and has shown tremendous leadership.''

Meanwhile, Durkin announced that quarterback Caleb Henderson has transferred to Maryland from North Carolina.
