WASHINGTON (AP) A person with knowledge of negotiations says that Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will play next season on the franchise tag.

The person says Cousins did not agree on a long-term deal before Friday's 4 p.m. ET deadline for franchise players to sign new contracts. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not publicly announce the move.

Cousins will earn $19.95 million next season. He'll be the first quarterback to play on the franchise tag since Drew Brees with the San Diego Chargers in 2005.
