Wentz may be Rams' target with top pick

The Los Angeles Rams have traded their way into selecting a quarterback with the top overall pick of the NFL draft in two weeks. The general feeling is the relocated franchise will pick the FCS product Wentz in a script appropriate for Hollywood.

Thursday's blockbuster trade, which included nine picks over the next two years exchanged between the Rams and the team that surrendered No. 1, Tennessee, left Los Angeles with the chance to make a splash on the draft's opening night April 28.

The Los Angeles Times immediately reported the Rams are "targeting" Wentz, who directed the last two of North Dakota State's five straight FCS national championships, although Goff, the standout from Cal, also will be considered heavily.

An FCS player has not been selected in the first round since 2008, when Arizona took Tennessee State cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at No. 16 and Baltimore picked Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco at No. 18.

The Cleveland Browns (No. 2), Dallas Cowboys (No. 4), San Francisco 49ers (No. 7) and Philadelphia Eagles (No. 8) also have reportedly been interested in drafting a quarterback, but the Rams made the big move past them in jumping up from No. 15. The Rams are no longer committed to Nick Foles, last year's starting quarterback, after naming backup Case Keenum the starter last month.

The 6-foot-5, 237-pound Wentz has prototypical size for the NFL and strong mechanics and throwing ability as well as proficiency in making plays on the run. He missed eight games as a senior with a broken bone in his throwing wrist, but was healthy when he returned for the national championship game Jan. 9 and earned most outstanding player honors for the second straight year.

Goff, 6-4, 215 pounds, faced better competition than Wentz as a three-year starter. He passed for 4,719 yards and 43 touchdowns as a senior and has been likened to Green Bay star Aaron Rodgers, who also played for the Golden Bears.
