St. Louis Blues forward Chris Stewart was suspended for three games by the National Hockey League on Wednesday for his hit from behind on Detroit's Niklas Kronwall.

Stewart recklessly shoved the Red Wings defenseman into the boards as he retrieved a puck in his own zone at the 11:14 mark of the first period Tuesday night.

"The onus is on Stewart to avoid this hit completely or, at the very least, minimize it," said NHL senior vice president of player safety and hockey operations Brendan Shanahan.

Kronwall suffered no apparent injury on the play and returned to the game.
