Senate Republican, Democratic Fundraisers Have Banner Month in January

The campaign arms of Senate Democrats and Republicans are celebrating banner months for fundraising in January.

Democrats pulled in a whopping $5.1 million last month, a welcome piece of news for the party after losing its 60-vote supermajority in the Senate last month and adding Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh to the growing ranks of retiring members.

The figure marks the biggest haul for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in a January and the largest bounty for any month this 2010 election cycle, officials said.

The DSCC has nearly $13 million cash on hand, with $833,000 in debt.

“With these resources, we will make sure that in November voters face a choice between Republicans standing with Washington's special interests and Democrats who are standing up for them," DSCC spokesman Eric Schultz said.

Republicans stayed competitive, hauling in slightly more than $5 million, a figure that officials with the National Republican Senatorial Committee said marks their best fundraising month of the 2010 election cycle in January.

The NRSC has $10.65 million cash on hand with no debt.

“Moving into 2010, the NRSC continues to build on our already-strong fundraising efforts with an expanding donor base that recognizes the critical importance of this year’s election," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, NRSC chairman.
