Flatev hopes to do for tortillas what Keurig did for coffee

Want the taste of a homemade tortilla but would never make one at home?

Now there's a new machine that lets you crank out a pipping-hot tortilla made to order in about 30 seconds.

The company Flatev --short for flatbread evolution -- developed a machine that uses pre-filled dough pods—similar to coffee and espresso-filled capsules for machines like Keurig's K-Cup or Nespresso's VertuoLine. Simply insert a pod of your choice of corn or wheat, press a button and within seconds, you have a fresh, made-to-order tortilla.

According the product website, ingredients for the flour tortillas consist of flour, water, baking soda, and salt; the corn tortillas are comprised solely of corn flour and water. Other flavors, such as honey, cheese and chiles, will soon be added.

Carlos Ruiz, CEO of Flatev, came up with the idea when he was living in Switzerland and couldn't find a good tasting tortilla in restaurants and supermarkets in the country.

The machine, which is small enough to fit on your kitchen counter, will retail for between $200 and $300 sometime in 2015.  Dough pods will be sold separately for about 90 cents each, to be stored in the refrigerator before use.

While Flatev isn't the first company to use the pod system, it's the first solid food item to hit the market.
