On last Sunday’s episode of Showtime’s “The Affair,” Noah (Dominic West) and Alison (Ruth Wilson) try to make their adulterous relationship work by getting engaged.
But can a marriage built on cheating actually go the distance?
“Relationships that start off that way definitely have more complications,” says Rachel Sussman, a New York-based therapist and relationship expert. “As long as you’re aware of them and work with them, it doesn’t mean it can’t last.”
According to Sussman, people who leave their spouses often think the new relationship is going to be paradise, because they have yet to deal with normal cohabitation stresses and may be feeling newly sexually fulfilled.
