Cops in Washington state have determined that Salma Hayek’s neighbor was justified in the killing of the Mexican actress’ beloved German Shepherd.
The gossip website TMZ reported that Hayek’s neighbor confessed to killing nine year-old Mozart over a week ago, but said that the dog was trespassing on his property.
The unidentified neighbor said that he was sick of the 49-year old actress’ pooches coming onto to his property and attacking his own dogs, which he claims happened every time Hayek’s caretaker took the animals for a walk.
On the day in question, the neighbor told local police that he found several of Hayek’s dogs in his garage, and he used a pellet gun to scare them away. The neighbor added that he had no intention of killing Mozart and that he did not think a pellet gun could be lethal.
Police agreed with the neighbor’s assessment and that the dogs were on his property at the time of the killing. The investigation has been closed.
Hayek, who is known for her large number of pets, posted a heartfelt message over the weekend expressing her grief and indignation at the killing.
"I haven't posted for a week as I [have] been mourning the death of my dog, Mozart, who I personally delivered out of his mother's womb. He was found dead in my ranch last Friday with a shot close to his heart," Hayek posted on Instagram, along with a photo of the dog.
Hayek told Jimmy Fallon last August on NBC's "Tonight Show" that she's in the habit of adopting stray dogs. At the time, she confessed, she had nine pooches.
Hayek acknowledged that her husband, the French entrepreneur Francois-Henri Pinault, has "threatened" her, saying she had rescued enough animals, which she brings into her "sanctuary," where she shelters about 30 creatures – including turkeys, hamsters, alpacas, horses, parrots, fish and a cat.
In another interview, with Ellen DeGeneres in October 2013, the star of "Frida" said that once in Mexico, she picked up a coyote thinking it was a dog.
