Top Puerto Rico drug dealer, brother convicted

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

Prosecutors in Puerto Rico say a man once considered the top drug dealer on the U.S. territory has been convicted of drug charges.

U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez Velez says a jury convicted Angel Ayala Vazquez of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, heroin and pills at public housing projects in the community of Bayamon.

Ayala, better known as "Angelo Millones," was captured in 2009 following a seven-year investigation. He was accused of importing cocaine from Colombia, often by way of the Dominican Republic, and distributing the drug in northern Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland.

Also convicted Tuesday was Ayala's brother, Luis Cruz Vazquez.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 8.
