Report: South American Leaders Want Honduras' Ousted Leader Back in Power

Some South American leaders at the United Nations are calling for deposed Honduran President Manuel Zelaya to be put back in power, according to a Reuters report.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called Wednesday for Zelaya to be reinstated, while speaking before the U.N. General Assembly.

"The international community demands that Mr. Zelaya immediately return to the presidency of his country and must be alert to ensure the inviolability of Brazil's diplomatic mission in the capital of Honduras," Lula said, according to Reuters.

Another close ally of Zelaya, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, told reporters before the opening of the General Assembly that the U.N. should demand that the deposed president be reinstated.

Zelaya was due to address the General Assembly Wednesday, but still remains holed up at the Brazilian Embassy in Honduras.

Roberto Micheletti, who runs the interim Honduran government, says that Zelaya was removed legally from power because he violated the country's constitution.
