Mother who abandoned her 6-year-old daughter in burning building spared jail time

A Miami woman who police say left her daughter to die in a burning apartment building in February pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of child neglect.
The woman, Erica Rosello, 33, is accused of running out of her condo and leaving behind her 6-year-old daughter while the building was ablaze, according to The Miami Herald. Rosello claims she thought her daughter had died because she didn’t hear her screaming for help.
Firefighters ended up rescuing her daughter, Grace, who was trapped and unconscious in the apartment. She was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and has recovered.
Rosello’s lawyers say that during the hectic moments of the fire, she heard Grace’s cries stop and believed she was dead, according to the Herald.
At the time of the fire, Rosello was on probation for a drunk-driving charge. Rosello was sentenced to 30 months of probation. As part of her plea agreement, she has to wear a bracelet that alerts authorities when she drinks alcohol. The young girl’s grandmother now has temporary custody of her, though Rosello is allowed supervised visits.
If Rosello violates parole she could face up to five years in prison.
In a statement, Rosello’s attorneys, Christopher DeCoste and Tara Kawass said the deal is fair for both sides.
“The goal of this deal is to reunite mother and daughter under the safest conditions. This is what all involved want, especially the young girl who really misses and needs her mother.”
