Israeli-Palestinian deadlock slows peace

The U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process says a "profound and persistent deadlock" between Israelis and Palestinians is slowing efforts for a permanent status agreement by September.

Robert Serry told the Security Council on Tuesday the two sides' failure to meet their earlier agreed timeline for a September accord is "dramatic." He is calling on both parties to work toward a two-state solution, and on the international community to help them.

Serry is expressing concern about Israeli settlement activity inside Palestinian territories. He also says the indiscriminate firing of missiles from Gaza into Israel must stop, and Israel, which has carried out airstrikes on Gaza, must show restraint.
