CARACAS, Venezuela – The European Union says it's giving more than $40 million to help Venezuelans suffering through the country's deepening humanitarian crisis.
The European Commission said Thursday that most of the money will be used to provide health and food assistance to vulnerable Venezuelans living in and outside of the country.
European leaders have also threatened a new round of sanctions against Venezuela's top officials, after what it considers President Nicolas Maduro's undemocratic re-election.
The European Commission's Christos Stylianides said he recently visited Colombia's border with Venezuela and saw the crisis himself.
He said European leaders cannot stand by and watch the "human tragedy" continue to unfold.
European officials say they're giving the money to crisis groups that have no relation to the government.
