The International Committee of the Red Cross says a female staffer has been abducted by armed men in Somalia's capital, and a Somali police officer says the nurse is German.

It is the latest in a series of targeted attacks on aid workers in the long-chaotic Horn of Africa nation.

A Red Cross statement says the staffer was seized Wednesday night when armed men entered the aid group's compound in Mogadishu. Police Capt. Mohamed Hussein says the German woman was abducted despite the presence of several security guards, who he said have been arrested.

In late March, a local Red Cross staffer was killed in a car bombing in Mogadishu.
