Two police officers in Mexico City are under arrest in connection with the disappearance of a 17-year-old student who has not been seen since he was detained last week and whose case has prompted outcry on social media and a protest.

Jose Gil Garcia is deputy secretary of police information. He says at a news conference that officers involved reported freeing Marco Antonio Sanchez Flores shortly after detaining him Jan. 23.

Nevertheless, Gil said two of the four officers are in custody while the investigation advances. He added that authorities have examined evidence including GPS data from the patrol car involved and video and audio recordings.

Dozens of people gathered at the capital's Independence Monument on Sunday to demand Sanchez be found alive.
