Officials say Indian and Pakistani troops have traded fire in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, killing two civilians and wounding three others on the Pakistani side.

A Pakistan army statement Monday says that Indian troops targeted civilians in the Jandrot and Hot Spring sectors along the military control line, killing two people and wounding three. The statement says Pakistani troops returned fire.

Lt. Col.Manish Mehta, an Indian army spokesman, said Pakistani soldiers fired at Indian positions in two sectors early Monday with no report of casualties.

India and Pakistan have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir, which both claim in its entirety, since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1947.
