WARSAW, Poland – Prosecutors in Poland say a former senator and 10 other people have been detained and questioned over allegations of corruption.
Polish media say the former senator, identified by prosecutors as Jozef P. from the city of Wroclaw, is a famous activist from the Solidarity freedom movement, Jozef Pinior, who in a daring 1981 action saved the movement's money from being seized by communist authorities.
Pinior was a European Parliament lawmaker from 2004-2009 and a Polish senator from 2011-2015.
Prosecutor Piotr Baczynski said Tuesday the ex-senator is suspected of having accepted two bribes totaling 46,000 zlotys ($11,000) last year from local businessmen who were among those detained. He refused to say whether P. admitted to the allegations.
Poland's conservative government is fighting corruption but critics say it is using that fight chiefly against political opponents.
