Albania's Interior Ministry says heavy rain and flooding in northwestern Albania has killed one person and damaged many homes.

A statement Tuesday said a 48-year old man lost his life the previous evening when he was swept away by floodwaters in the town of Lac, 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of the capital, Tirana.

More than 100 houses and apartments were flooded, roads were damaged by landslides and the whole area suffered power cuts.

The Agriculture Ministry said flooding had covered some 300 hectares (740 acres) in the area and scores of livestock were killed or lost.

Some 150 emergency personnel have been deployed as rain is forecast to continue.
