A small private plane traveling from the north Italian city of Treviso has gone missing over Macedonia in heavy rain.

Police in Macedonia said they were searching for the plane south of the capital Skopje late Tuesday after it lost contact with the city's airport.

Before losing contact, the pilot had requested to land at Skopje to refuel but didn't report any emergency.

Authorities at the airport said they had no details of the passengers or where the plane was heading. They described it as a light aircraft made by the U.S.-based Piper Aircraft Inc.

The search was still underway after nightfall, more than four hours after the pilot's last communication with the airport in Skopje.
