A Gambian opposition leader says a protester who was detained earlier this year has died while undergoing surgery at a hospital in the capital, Banjul.

United Democratic Party official Suntou Touray said Monday that Ebrima Solo Krummah died on Saturday while in state custody.

Krummah stood trial along with others who had been arrested at a demonstration against the arrests of opposition leaders and the alleged torture and death of one of them.

Gambia's largest opposition party on Sunday blamed President Yahya Jammeh's regime for Krummah's death. It said family members had not been informed of his medical condition, and he was denied visits.

A lawyer has called for an independent investigation.

Activists accuse Gambia of a brutal crackdown on rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
