Local authorities say a regional train has hit a tree that had fallen on the tracks in a rural area in southeast France, seriously injuring one person.

A spokeswoman for the local prefecture in the Herault region said that the accident took place Wednesday afternoon following a hail storm between the towns of Saint-Aunes and Lunel, near the south-eastern city of Montpellier.

She said several more people have been wounded. The seriously injured person has been evacuated by helicopter.

She said many rescue workers have arrived to help evacuate passengers and that local train traffic has been stopped between the cities of Montpellier and Nimes.

The spokeswoman, who spoke on condition of anonymity to comply with regional rules, couldn't immediately provide any more details about the incident.
