Egyptian state media is reporting that Noble prize-winning chemist Ahmed Zewail, who was a dual U.S.-Egyptian citizen, has passed away at the age of 70.

Zewail, who died in the United States on Tuesday, was a pioneer in the study of chemical reactions over very short period of times.

He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 in recognition for his research in the field of laser science.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi expressed his condolences over the death, saying the country had lost a son and role model.
