THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Dutch police say a 28-year-old woman has died after her parachute apparently failed to open when she attempted a BASE jump from an electricity pylon.
National Police spokesman Dennis Janus says the woman, whose identity was not released, jumped from the pylon Tuesday night near the eastern village of Afferden. Three other parachutists were unhurt in the incident.
Janus said Wednesday that police have seized the parachutes for their investigation.
Climbing electricity pylons is illegal in the Netherlands, but Janus says the three other parachutists will not be charged.
He says they "have already been punished enough by witnessing this terrible accident."
BASE is an acronym for building, antenna, span, and earth — a reference to the four types of objects thrill-seekers jump off of wearing parachutes or wingsuits.
