Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry says a border guard has been killed by a land mine near the kingdom's frontier with war-ravaged Yemen.

An Interior Ministry statement issued late on Tuesday says the guard died in the Saudi province of Jazan, along the mountainous border the kingdom shares with Yemen.

The statement did not say who laid the land mine. However, such bombings have been routine since a Saudi-led coalition began a war in March 2015 against Yemen's Shiite rebels known as Houthis.

The war in Yemen has killed some 9,000 people and pushed the Arab world's poorest country to the brink of famine. It also created a vacuum that enabled both Yemen's al-Qaida branch and an upstart Islamic State affiliate to seize territory and carry out large-scale attacks.
