MILAN – Italian news agency ANSA says a body has been found in a river in the town where a U.S. airman went missing 10 days ago.
ANSA didn't cite sources, but said police and a coroner were working Tuesday to identify the body, which was found by a passer-by. Officials at the Aviano Air Base where Staff Sgt. Halex Hale was assigned and the Carabinieri, which were leading the investigation, declined immediate comment.
The 24-year-old from Middletown, Indiana, who is assigned to the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base north of Venice, went missing on July 2 after leaving a friend's cookout off base to walk to another friend's home about 15 minutes away. Authorities said Hale left behind his cellphone, car and wallet at the cookout.
