ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) – Police arrested 10 protesters who were holding a sit-in in the lobby of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio's Orlando office on the one-month anniversary of a massacre at a gay nightclub.
The protesters were arrested on misdemeanor trespass charges Monday evening, when the building closed to the public, at the request of the building's owner.
Dozens of protesters started the 49-hour sit-in Monday to remember the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. They were there for 9-and-a-half hours before she was asked to leave, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
"This is just a group of concerned citizens in Orlando who came together to say that a month has gone by now, and we've seen nothing but more violence and discrimination," Ida Eskamani, a spokeswoman for the gay and transgender civil rights group Equality Florida, told the Sentinel after her arrest.
Gunman Omar Mateen opened fire at Pulse on June 12 in a rampage that left 49 victims dead and injured 53 at the gay nightclub as it was celebrating Latin night.
The protesters said they were targeting Rubio because of the support he has gotten from the National Rifle Association and his opposition to same-sex marriage.
